Group Activities
Class writing: produce a bats’ newspaper, with news, sports, features, cartoons, advice columns
Oral: have students do a choral reading of parts of the book
Bats at the Beach Mural: Along the bottom of a long piece of dark blue or black paper, glue a strip of yellow or tan paper (sand) or half-sheets of sandpaper, and a thin strip of blue paper (water). Have each student draw, decorate and cut out a bat or family of bats engaged in his or her favorite beach activity. Attach students' bats to the background. What kind of details or activities can you think of to add to the mural?
Bat Olympics: What events would be held in a Bat Olympics? Have students make up a Bat Olympic sport, and give a short report on how it works, including a drawing of a bat participating in the sport.
Observation:
How many bats play how many games?
What things do the bats take to the beach?
What do they find on the beach to play with?
