Thematic Connections

Humor

What funny things take place in Bats at the Beach?
Why are they funny?
Do you think the bats themselves think those things are funny?
Discuss the role of surprise, unexpected pictures or words in humor. Is something funny if you know it’s coming?

Fear of the Unknown / Prejudices

Bats are often seen as frightening Halloween creatures, with big fangs. How many scary things can you think of that you've heard about bats? Do you think they're really all true? Do you think you'd feel the same way about bats if you learned more about them?

We often fear things we don't understand. This is true with animals, but also with people from other places or cultures.

What do you think real bats are trying to do when they live their lives (eat insects and fruit when they're hungry, find a warm and safe place to sleep, raise young bats). Is this the same as with people, or different?

Family

What kinds of things do the bats in Bats at the Beach do that are like the things your family does? Do they like to spend time together? In real life, baby bats cling to their mothers’ belly fur before they're ready to fly on their own. How do you think that feels? Does that sound like fun?
